Guide · Shopify Date Picker

Product page, cart or checkout: where should a Shopify date picker live?

The best placement depends on what the date represents. A product booking date, a whole-order delivery date and a checkout delivery choice are not the same thing.

Updated September 2026

Before installing or building a Shopify date picker, decide whether the customer is choosing a date for one product or for the whole order. That single decision changes where the picker should normally appear.

Product-page date picker

A product-page date picker is useful when the date belongs to an individual item: a cake booking, rental start date, appointment, event ticket or other product-specific commitment.

It is less natural when one delivery date should apply to the entire basket, because the customer may be asked to choose dates repeatedly as they add products.

Cart-page date picker

A cart-page date picker suits whole-order delivery or pickup scheduling. At this point the full basket is known, so the date can respond to the most restrictive product lead time, fulfilment method or capacity rule.

Shopify's own free delivery-date tutorial uses this approach and explicitly notes that its customization works only on the cart page, not drawer or pop-up cart styles.

What about cart drawers?

Many modern Shopify stores use a cart drawer instead of sending customers to /cart. A cart-page block will not automatically appear inside a drawer. Merchants should check the exact placement supported by an app before installing it.

The current public TruBytes storefront block is cart-page based and does not currently provide cart-drawer placement.

Checkout date picker

Checkout can be an attractive place to collect final delivery information because the customer is already completing fulfilment details. However, Shopify currently limits checkout UI extensions on the information, shipping and payment steps to Shopify Plus stores.

For non-Plus merchants, a cart-page or product-page experience is therefore usually the practical storefront placement.

Which placement should you choose?

PlacementBest forMain consideration
Product pageDates tied to one itemMixed baskets can become repetitive
Cart pageOne delivery/pickup date for the whole orderRequires customers to visit the cart page
Cart drawerStores that keep customers in a drawer flowNeeds explicit drawer integration
CheckoutFinal fulfilment selectionCore checkout-step UI extensions require Shopify Plus

Placement is only half the problem

Once the picker is in the right place, merchants still need to decide which dates are valid. Product lead times, cutoffs, daily capacity, local-delivery zones and pickup schedules are often more important operationally than the calendar itself.
